A desktop publishing program refers to a software used by professional and non professional graphic designers for creating content for both professional and non professional type of publishing. The term refers to software like Adobe PageMaker, Adobe InDesign, QuarkXPress, Adobe FrameMaker, and Corel VENTURA.

Adobe PageMaker

Adobe PageMaker was the first ever desktop publishing program by Adobe. It was introduced in the year 1985 by Aldus Corporation. Aldus corporation is the old name of Adobe PageMaker. Adobe acquired both Aldus and PageMaker in 1994. Adobe PageMaker was initially launched for the Apple Macintosh but after some time another version of Adobe PageMaker was released for PC.

Adobe PageMaker follows the Adobe Systems' Postscript page description language. Its latest version is PageMaker 7.0 which was released by Adobe on July 9, 2001. Since then various updates for both PC and Mac have been released. Adobe PageMaker was awarded with a SPA Excellence in Software Award for Best New Use of a Computer in the year 1986.

Adobe InDesign

Adobe InDesign is another desktop publishing program produced by Adobe Systems. It works using the C++ programming language. It was launched to give a direct competition to Quark XPress. Initially, it was very hard for Adobe InDesign to attract users. In 2002, It became the first desktop publishing software that released a Mac OS X-native version. Afterwards, InDesign CS and InDesign CS2 were released together with software like Photoshop, Acrobat and Illustrator in the Creative Suite.

Quark Xpress

Quark Xpress is a computer application which is used to create and edit complex page layouts. It can be used on both Mac OS X and Windows. It was released in 1987 by Quark, Inc. It is still owned and published by Quark Inc. Its latest version is Quark Xpress 7.3. The latest version includes new features which enables you to publish; in dozens of languages including international English and American-English. It is mainly used for producing complex page layouts for newspapers, catalogs, magazines and printed material similar to it produced by large publishing houses. It largely dominates the market along with Adobe InDesign.

Corel Ventura

Corel Ventura was the first popular desktop publishing package released for IBM PC compatible computers with a DOS platform. Its first version was released in 1986. Corel Ventura was distributed by several companies in the beginning. After sometime Xerox established a monopoly in the market as the only distributor of Corel Ventura. In the year 1989 they released a source code. A new version 3.0 Gold was released in 1990; another version 4.0 was released in the year 1991. Its last version is 4.1.1 which was released in 1993.
